The property has a lovely, intimate feel and the design is beautiful, more like a private residence than a hotel. Its private townhouses are unusual, since there aren't any traditional rooms. But the location is a long way from the main parts of the city, so getting around wasn't as convenient as I'd hoped. I came to Capella Shanghai with high expectations after seeing it ranked among the world's best. The stay felt limited, though. There wasn't much to do, see, or eat on site, and the spa was just alright, not what I'd expect at this level. Room service food was genuinely awful. The lobby seating area only offers tea or the same limited room service menu, so casual dining choices are scarce. The boulangerie sounds lovely, but it sells out completely by afternoon, so you'd need to go early. The only other restaurant is a formal French one, which doesn't suit every mood or time of day. Breakfast was below average too, which surprised me given the brand's reputation. I expected a lot more from Capella, often considered among the leading luxury hotel brands in Asia, if not the best. The design and atmosphere are beautiful, but the experience didn't live up to the excellence I was anticipating.

This really is a special stay. Sean, Nicole, and Irina were wonderful, as were the other staff whose names I unfortunately didn't catch. The service was fantastic, they handled our extra requests and surprised us with thoughtful little touches. The culturists/concierge helped arrange our plans and made useful suggestions without being pushy. We also enjoyed the many activities and experiences, the Capella "rituals." The hotel feels like a love letter to Shanghai, from the old Shikumen style rooms and Shanghainese breakfasts to the historic Shanghai newspapers. I loved the details, especially the comic books in the entertainment room, which I'll add to my family's collection. You won't find hotel rooms in this style anywhere else in a city this wonderful. It's a bit away from Shanghai's more touristy side, but the area itself is wonderful and Didi makes it easy to get to places like Xintiandi, Jingan temple, and Huaihai road. If you're visiting Shanghai, you need to stay here. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

I was absolutely speechless at how beautiful this place is. I was living on borrowed time and money, but I really wish I could go back. The staff were all so kind, friendly, and sweet, and they took such good care of us that I didn't expect it to be so child-friendly. Breakfast was divine, and we wished we had room to eat more. Book at least three nights to enjoy the facilities and activities fully. You'll leave with nothing but good memories.

Our stay so far has been fantastic. Matthew has been amazing, so helpful and accommodating with our requests. I'm glad we're getting a very different Shanghai experience at Capella, away from the busy streets and skyscrapers.

The rooms are beautiful and luxurious, but keep the stairs in mind if you have accessibility needs. We booked four non-refundable nights for our family, then switched hotels because of accessibility issues for our elderly relatives. Capella refunded the full stay and even offered to carry our luggage and call a car to our new hotel. We'd offered to pay for one night because we'd washed up and used some disposable amenities, but they insisted on the full refund. The hospitality was excellent from the start. When we asked for more water, they promptly brought ten bottles to each room. Staff carried our luggage upstairs and carefully accommodated our dietary restrictions when we ordered breakfast in the room. This alone merited five stars. It was a wonderful, if short, stay, and I'd definitely return next time if I weren't traveling with elderly parents.
