The hotel is directly across the road from Shanghai Metro Line 10 and Takashimaya shopping center. Nearby there’s a McDonald’s, a Haagen-Dazs ice cream shop, and several coffee shops. There’s also a noodle shop beside the hotel, but I found the food there poor and overpriced, so I’d avoid it. A ride on Line 10 gets you to Nanjing East Road, where you can transfer to Line 2. Going the other way takes you to Hongqiao Railway Station for high-speed trains. The room rate seemed reasonable: I paid 500 RMB/Day for a queen-size room, including breakfast, WiFi, and laundry service. Parking may be difficult, though it wouldn’t concern me much since many tourists use public transport or hitchhike. One thing I learned about the room numbers: a number starting with 8 doesn’t necessarily mean the eighth floor. It may refer to the building number, with the second digit showing the floor. My room, 8235, was on the second floor. The small gym and laundry room were on the eighth floor, and the public security office was on the third.

The rooms were spacious and tidy, and breakfast was nice. The hotel is in the middle of Gubei’s hoghend neighborhood, within walking distance of the metro and a Japanese-style shopping center.

The room was nice, but the Wi-Fi was slow enough to cause problems. YouTube and Google services wouldn’t connect through the hotel network, so I had to use au roaming tethering instead. Downloads reached up to 10MB, while uploads were only around 1MB. Browsing sites like YouTube worked, but two-way remote desktop communication was difficult, so I couldn’t work remotely from the hotel. I don’t know whether that was due to the network environment or the hotel’s location. 💦

There’s a subway station close by, so the location is good. The room was small and simple, with white decor and light walkways. I think Japanese people would like it.

The staff’s attitude and service were excellent, but that was the one bright spot. Smoke smell lingered in the room, the WiFi was extremely slow, and I could hear the water pipes running next door because the soundproofing was poor. 10/25 Room No. 8785
