The room was nice and clean, and there’s a fruit market nearby, handy if you don’t eat meat. My only complaint was that none of the staff spoke English.

The place smelled of cigarettes and the rooms were dirty. Nobody spoke English, and someone stole a new pair of shoes and Bose earphones from my colleague’s room. One of the worst hotels I’ve ever stayed in.

We had dinner downstairs and found they didn’t have cold beer. I was surprised when our interpreter went to a nearby convenience store and bought some for us. The breakfast there was plain porridge and egg dishes, just okay, nothing special. Our room was small but clean and had what we needed. The Chinese side booked the hotel for us on a tight budget, and it turned out decent. I’d stayed at a chain hotel in Beijing before, and that one was ugly. This hotel was on another level.
