Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai

Breakfast was the weak point, average and a little disappointing compared with similar hotels. The property could use some modernization, especially as hotel rooms elsewhere are getting smarter and more updated. Still, it was a comfortable, reliable stay, and I’d return. The service was unbeatable, as expected in China, and the front desk team was helpful and genuinely tried to meet requests. The room was quiet, very clean, and excellent for sleep. I barely used the AC, though it seemed quiet. The hotel’s location is great and the room view was amazing. With a name like Mandarin Oriental, expectations are high. It doesn’t quite have that “wow” feeling anymore, but I still recommend it.

Getting around from here may be a drawback if you’re relying on public transit. The hotel sits a little away from Pudong’s main tourist area, and the nearest metro or train station is almost 1 KM away. Otherwise, the staff were welcoming and helpful, with good English and plenty of directions for a first time visitor to China. They paid attention to every detail. The large rooms have all the amenities you’d expect from a Mandarin Oriental, and the views of the Oriental Pearl Tower added a lot to the experience.

Sophie made a very busy check-in feel easy. She stayed calm, greeted me warmly as soon as I arrived, and made sure I wasn’t overlooked despite the rush. She handled all my requests efficiently and positively, so the process felt smooth and stress-free. She’s clearly a professional who takes pride in her work, and a real asset to the hotel.

The staff in the Club Lounge remembered our room number and what drinks and food we preferred, and Steven at the front desk made sure everything went smoothly and we were well looked after. The employees here in Shanghai are especially personable. Staff at many other hotels aren’t as memorable or genuine during a stay. It’s always a fantastic experience at the Mandarin Oriental, where they take such good care of you.
