This has a classic corporate luxury feel rather than the look of a trendy boutique hotel. Its location in Hongqiao/Changning District is especially useful for business travelers and people passing through, right by Shanghai's newer commercial hub. It's exceptionally close to Shanghai Mart and INTEX Shanghai, making it handy for convention attendees. Vitality's breakfast buffet is huge, with Eastern and Western choices, and the noodle station is a must. For a more formal meal, Royal Court serves Cantonese and Shanghainese dishes that are sophisticated and well regarded by locals. The health club has a large heated indoor pool and a well-equipped gym, which is rarely crowded.

Getting around is a bit of a walk. There are two metro stations with two lines nearby: one is a 10-15 minute walk across the park, while the other is a whopping 25-30 minutes from a busy shopping area. It's nice to have shopping and food there, but 25 minutes is too far on foot. The hotel feels dated, and the room, bathtub, and wardrobe all need an upgrade. It's four-star at best, definitely not five. Breakfast was much the same each day, so don't expect much from a four-star hotel. Though it ran until 10am, staff started clearing at 9:50. When I asked for soup noodles or eggs at the egg station, they said there was nothing left. Staff could use more service training: someone took my plates while I was still eating without asking or even giving a polite smile. Parcel handling was another headache. At hotels I've stayed in elsewhere, parcels were delivered to the room. Here, I had to search a rack outside the building with dozens of parcels on it. When I politely asked concierge to get mine, he looked impatient and ran into the room behind the counter to get another guy. That man was also visibly annoyed and reluctant to help. It was my first time getting such poor service at a hotel. I complained to the manager, who apologized and had the second man bring it to my room, but he still looked furious, as though I owed him millions of dollars. I also left my teeth guard behind by accident. The person who answered when I called was nice and helpful, which was good service for once, but they said they hadn't seen it. The manager and that caller were the only ones who provided decent service. Otherwise, the stay was really unpleasant. First and last time.

The distance to the metro felt misleading. The hotel description says it's only 450m away, but the road layout meant a long detour and a much longer walk. I also had a very disappointing experience trying to collect food I'd ordered through Meituan. I was told they don't deliver to room doors, which was fine. But when I ran into trouble with the pickup box, a woman at reception just looked helpless and said she couldn't understand Mandarin. I asked the concierge next, and they kept saying “nothing can be done” without trying to help. That was easily the worst hotel service I've experienced in China, and the stay was very disappointing.

Friendly staff and good value. The rooms feel a little dated, but they're comfortable.
