The shared toilets were pretty gross, and the cleanliness could be better. It’s a great location, though a little hard to find since there’s no sign outside the building for the hostel. I liked the kind of people it attracted. I met my current best friend there while staying in February.

It took a little effort to find the place, tucked away on the 6th floor of an ordinary building. I had a single room with my own bathroom. The room was an okay size and reasonably clean, and the small bathroom was clean enough too. The location was really good, just a few minutes’ walk from Nanjing Road. I’m not much of a hostel person and don’t use the common areas that other guests often appreciate. Two nights here were fine, but next time I’d rather pay for a hotel room. The girls at reception were a bit too casual for my taste, though they kindly ordered me a taxi to the airport.

This is a review of the Blue Mountain hostel near the Bund, one of several Blue Mountain properties in the Shanghai area. It’s on the 6th floor of a multistory building, with no sign outside, so look for the building number. From Pudong airport, you can take the Maglev to Longyang Rd station, then go to Nanjing Rd station and walk about 5 min. Or take line 2 all the way to Nanjing. The location is good, close to Nanjing Rd and the Bund. I stayed twice during stopovers, and each time checking in or out was slow, even with several staff behind the desk. They spoke a bit of English but weren’t especially warm or friendly, so ask questions yourself, since they don’t offer much beyond the basic information. The facilities were decent, about what I’d expect from other hostels I’ve stayed in. Dorms have lockers, and you can borrow a lock for free. The mattresses are thin, but the sheets were clean. You remove them yourself when you leave, and it’s best to ignore the stains on the mattress pad underneath. On my second stay, they’d run out of beds in the 6-bed dorm and “upgraded” me to a small bunked twin room shared with another girl. It had more amenities but was much smaller and right next to the loud showers. The bathrooms were clean and had good water pressure. Remember to bring shower shoes. The patio at this location is a nice extra. A decent, cheap place for a night during a layover.

For an affordable room, this hostel is a good option. The people in the lobby were helpful whenever needed, and the travel information was very well organized for Shanghai and other famous cities and places. Don’t expect comfort or food, though. The bar is good. Milan

The rooms are appropriate for what you pay, and the location is excellent, with lots of good restaurants nearby and the subway very close. I had a private room with my own bathroom, so I didn’t run into some of the issues other people mentioned. The staff were very hospitable. For the price, it’s an easy choice.
