Shanghai Maiju Hotel

It feels run down, with cramped, unclean interiors, and I didn't think it was worth staying in. It hardly feels like a hotel. It reminded me of hotels in Singapore in the sixties, only worse.

Everything was fine, except that the bed was extremely hard.

After another hotel and its third-party booking service left me stranded overnight, I tried this place at random and was lucky to find a room. For the price, it was better than I expected. The staff were helpful, and the woman at the desk who found me a room was a real gem. They didn't speak English, but my phone's translator got us through. Thanks! I'm adding recent photos to help you find the hotel. It's affordable and handily placed near the Maglev station and Pudong Airport. The walk takes about 15 minutes. That's manageable without much luggage, but the paved sidewalk isn't great with a suitcase. My room was clean and had toothpaste, a toothbrush, gel, and shampoo. You can switch the AC between cooling and heating. There's no refrigerator, and the soundproofing isn't great. For a tired traveler after a long trip, though, the noise wasn't a big deal given the low price. A Family Mart open 24 hours is nearby for food, drinks, and other small items.
