The rooms are basic, as you’d expect for the price, but the hostel was excellent. Staff were understanding, and the lounge was a great place to meet people and hang out, which other hostels I’ve tried haven’t always managed well. You’re right in the city center, just a stone’s throw from the river promenade.

The price is reasonable, but the place isn’t easy to get to or spot, and I had to double back after missing it. If you arrive at night, keep in mind that elevator use is restricted at certain times, so you may have to take the stairs. The room was dim, the soundproofing was poor, and the door didn’t feel secure. It looked basically clean, but I wouldn’t stay again.

The rooms were filthy. I found about half a dozen cobwebs and used cigarettes under my bed. The security guard spent much of the day watching TV at full volume in the shared kitchen and living area, which was antisocial. The Wi-Fi was unusable, and I heard several guests complain about it. Some even asked whether I was having the same problem. If you’re traveling, I wouldn’t use this hostel. It seems to be used mostly by businessmen who get angry if anyone makes noise after 10 p.m., but then wake you at 7 a.m. by loudly clearing their throats at the ensuite sink and chatting.

Right in downtown Shanghai, with lots within walking distance and the subway very close. The rates are affordable, the beds are comfy, and the staff are friendly. There’s also a restaurant serving their take on Western food.
