Sheraton Shanghai Hongkou Hotel

The neighboring guests made noise at night and disturbed the peace. Otherwise, this is a remarkable classic hotel, with lots of room and an old-fashioned feel. The decor is a little dated, but the generous room size makes up for it.

The building and rooms are lovely, and the lounge is big, though its food wasn't great. The service doesn't feel up to Sheraton standards. Reception staff seemed a bit lost and weren't very welcoming, and their presentation wasn't great. Room service was terrible, with food below the standard I'd expect and trays that looked old and cheap. The doormen weren't useful either. The location isn't ideal, but the MTR is close. Rain makes getting a taxi difficult. I understand service standards can differ between China and the West, but it's still a Sheraton.

The hotel is opposite Hailun Road Metro station, so getting around was easy, and we felt safe walking in the area. There isn't much nearby, though a quickie mart is just down the road. The rooftop bar didn't make much of its prime position, and drinks were pricey, as you'd expect. I spent two weeks here on a business trip and had a great stay. My room on the 27th floor was spotless, with good facilities, a large comfortable bed, and a safe for my things. Tea and coffee were replenished regularly. There was a mini bar, but I didn't use it, and the prices were sky-high, as expected. The wet room was excellent, with two shower heads and a large freestanding bath. My room had British and Australian/Chinese-style plugs, though my Aussie plugs only fit one of the several sockets. Breakfast was included and had the usual hotel selection: a full English breakfast, continental options, and Asian food. The baked beans were hard, so I'd avoid those.

The noodles and porridge were standouts at the good breakfast buffet. I also got to try the Japanese restaurant on the 37th floor, which had an amazing view. My room was clean, with good amenities, and the service was very good during my three-night stay. I'd return if I get the chance.
