Sofitel Shanghai Hongqiao

Getting to the CIIE was easy thanks to the hotel’s free shuttles at set times. There was also a CIIE desk with the same transfers and passes that let us enter the venue directly, so there was less walking and quicker access. When my flight changed because of delays, staff went out of their way to help me get to the airport earlier than planned. My room was clean, roomy, and comfortable, and the in-room dining was tasty without being too expensive. Breakfast had a great mix of Western and Asian food. After expo days, one mall was about a five-minute walk away, and another was roughly six minutes by taxi. Everyone I met was friendly, professional, and ready to help. I had a really good stay at Sofitel Shanghai.

Getting around was straightforward: a taxi to the train station or airport took about 15 minutes, then the metro into the city took 35. We also really enjoyed Club Millesime. Jenny was especially kind and professional, and we appreciated her hospitality. The hotel has a grand feel, with lovely design in the lobby, restaurant, and rooms. Breakfast offered plenty to choose from.

The rooms are spacious, and the beds are comfortable. It’s a beautiful hotel, but the service was below average. We’d just left an IBIS that did a much better job than this five-star place. For a foreigner wanting a decent hotel near the convention centre, I’d suggest the Intercontinental. It wasn’t as nice-looking, but the staff and attention to detail made up for that.

The buffet breakfast is well worth adding, with lots of food, including local flavors and Western choices. The bed was comfortable, and the room had a bathtub. The room itself was an okay size, and the hotel has a restaurant, pool, bar, and spa. It’s smoke-free, but some guests may still smoke in rooms. My first room smelled strongly of smoke, so I told reception and they moved me quickly to a bigger room. It’s a quiet spot, and taxis or reserved cars are easy to get. It’s not far from the convention centre or airport, though at rush hour I’d book a car at least 30 minutes ahead. The Bund is about 30 minutes to an hour away depending on traffic. The French-themed decor gives it a luxurious European look. I stayed here six years ago when it was brand new; this time the room facilities felt aged, though everything was still in good condition.
