The promenade is wide and raised, so it’s easy to walk and take photos even with the crowds. For fewer people in your skyline shots, head to the north end near Waibaidu Bridge. There’s hardly any shade, so early morning or late evening is more comfortable than the midday heat. Try to arrive just before sunset: the buildings usually light up between 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM, depending on the season. You can also cross to Pudong on the local ferry for a few yuan and see the skyline from the water without paying for an expensive cruise. The Bund is a must-see Shanghai waterfront, with an amazing contrast between the city’s colonial past and futuristic skyline. Looking west along the Huangpu River feels like stepping into history, with the preserved Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque buildings known as the "Gallery of World Architecture." Across the river, the view takes in Pudong and the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, and "Bottle Opener" (SWFC), especially striking once the lights come on. Visit in the morning and you may see locals practicing Tai Chi; come at night for the neon glow. Either way, the energy is incredible.

The North Bund view at night is spectacular: the river spreads out with cruise ships passing, while the city lights shimmer on the water beneath the illuminated skyline. It’s a memorable place to see in Shanghai. We took the Shanghai Metro from People’s Square Station to International Cruise Terminal Station, a simple and convenient trip. From there, the walk to the waterfront was relaxing, with a cool breeze in the evening. It felt more peaceful and less crowded than the main Bund. Getting a Didi after we disembarked was easy too, so the trip went smoothly.

The Bund is Shanghai’s most iconic spot, and the view at night is so beautiful. Across the river, the colorful buildings and modern skyscrapers make a wonderful sight. If you get the chance to visit Shanghai, don’t forget to come see it.

The contrast here is what gets me every time: historic colonial buildings on one side and futuristic towers across the river. Day or night, when the city lights come alive, the views are spectacular. Photos just can’t capture what it feels like to stand by the water and look at the Shanghai skyline. The Bund is one of the world’s most beautiful waterfronts, and it’s the heart and soul of the city. Every visit leaves me amazed. If you’re in Shanghai, make time to come.

The Bund gets busy, but that’s part of its lively feel. If you want a quieter way to take it in, a Huangpu River cruise shows the panorama from the water, and the back streets behind the Bund have lovely old buildings and cozy cafes. I’d recommend it whether you’re into history, architecture, photography, or just want to be amazed. It’s a five-star experience that engages the senses, teaches you something, and lifts your spirits. From the Zhongshan Road promenade, the view is extraordinary. Across the river, Pudong’s glass-and-steel skyline includes the glittering Shanghai Tower, the bottle-opener-shaped Shanghai World Financial Center, and the Oriental Pearl Tower. Turn around and you’re looking at the old “Paris of the East”: banks, trading houses, and customs offices in Neoclassical, Gothic, and Art Deco styles. That striking mix of old and new, East and West, feels deeply symbolic. The scene changes through the day. In daylight, you can make out the historic buildings’ stonework while ferries and barges move along the Huangpu River. At dusk, the sky turns watercolor-like, then the Pudong skyline lights up in sync, its reflections dancing across the river in a mesmerizing double panorama. Visitors from around the world and locals out for an evening stroll add to the contagious energy. The Bund is a breathtaking part of Shanghai’s story and of modern China.
