A Chinese three-star hotel with clean, small rooms. Sometimes the staff struggled with English and had to refer to translation apps.

I’ve stayed here many times before, so I expect things to improve a lot soon. The renovations meant we lost breakfast and laundry, which hurt the rating. The rooms are clean and spacious enough, with simple but sufficient amenities. I mainly picked it for the location.

The breakfast was a highlight, with local food and made-to-order noodles from the cheerful chef. Over our five days, the gentlemen checking in guests also worked hard clearing tables. Fei-Fei deserves a special thank you for going out of her way to get us onto the hotel Wi-Fi, which was difficult without a local phone number, and to find us a room when our assigned one wasn’t ready at check-in. We had a clean room with one queen bed, laminated floors, a modern look, and the details and room service that made the stay great. The hotel exceeded our expectations, felt clean, and was great value. Jiashan Road metro is nearby, and there’s a local bus stop right in front. Tianzifang’s restaurants, crafts, and alleyway culture are an easy walk away. The hotel seemed popular and worked well as a base for Shanghai, which we found to be among the great cities we’ve visited.

The rooms were clean and spacious.

There’s plenty to eat nearby, from street vendors and small restaurants to places for a quick grocery run. The JI Hotel is right by the exit of Jiashan Road Shanghai Metro Station, so getting around is easy. The rooms felt comfortable, with a sensible layout, and were clean and tidy. Bottled water and basic toiletries were provided. For anything else, you can ask the front desk to send a robot upstairs, a convenient modern touch. Breakfast is a buffet with a good range, including Chinese congee and side dishes as well as Western bread and fruit. The freshly cooked noodles and wontons stood out, especially the tasty broth and generous toppings. A nice warm breakfast in the morning. Every so often, there was a faint cigarette smell in the bathroom, possibly from the ventilation system or a previous guest’s habits. The stay was stable and comfortable at a reasonable price, with attentive service, making it a good business option.
