Both rooms we stayed in had balconies, though they were different sizes, and each had a great view of the world’s largest praying wheel. The whole stay felt surreal. Oxygen was piped into the room, everything was spotless, and dinner and breakfast were both fantastic. At $300 a night it wasn’t cheap by Chinese standards. I took a photo of the porter, who was Tibetan and working incredibly hard. He deserves recognition.

The yak hotpot is worth trying, and breakfast has a great selection of Tibetan dishes. The restaurant also serves Chinese and Chinese-style Italian food. From our terrace, we had stunning views of the ancient town, which the hotel overlooks from its hilltop position. Inside, the room had floor heating, a humidifier, an air purifier and oxygen supply, plus a towel warmer cabinet and Dyson hairdryer. They also brought complimentary late-night snacks and desserts to our room. This hotel is incredible.

The room was on the small side, though the minibar was stocked with free non-alcoholic drinks. The restaurant and lobby entrance are beautiful, but there isn’t much else to do at the hotel: no gym, pool, spa or other facilities, so it can get boring if you aren’t out touring. The restaurant has a large menu, but often about half the dishes you want aren’t available. Book ahead, especially in bad weather during high season. I was told to go down to town in the rain because the restaurant was full. The location is the big draw. It looks out over the whole old town, and it’s easy to walk down. Coming back up the hill at 3,300m is tiring, so call a taxi, which costs about $2. The taxi can take a back road to the hotel and avoid the terrible traffic through the old town, a busy tourist spot for Chinese visitors. I also wouldn’t stay outside town, like at Banyan Tree. A friend had trouble getting a taxi pickup there, and getting to sights and food can cost a lot more. All that said, I’d still highly recommend this place.

The staff were very helpful and accommodating. The hotel is in a great spot, with a lovely view across the city.

Looking out over the Shangri la old city, this resort has a distinctive style and a comfortable, friendly feel. The service was exceptional.
