Shangri-La E-Outfitting Boutique Hotel

Tom Tan made our stay memorable by paying attention to every little detail. Since it was our first visit to ShangriLa, he explained the things we might face at high altitude and showed us around the hotel, including the lovely garden and oxygen room. He also gave us detailed information about the old town and its restaurants, and arranged the hotel courtesy transport to the airport. He was attentive, patient, and resourceful, and I wanted to recognize him for it.

We were in the city centre, and the room was spacious and comfortable. The buffet had a wide selection, and the staff were polite and helpful. Special thanks to Mr. Terence, who kindly helped locate my misplaced phone.

The staff were a highlight, especially Rose, whose Tibetan Tea demonstration was spectacular. They were friendly and polite throughout. Mr Dragon handled check-in briskly and efficiently, and the reservation team had already cleared up a small confusion very well. Our large room had a lovely view of the hills. We enjoyed the hot pot buffet dinner on both nights, and breakfast was good too. The hotel sits a little outside the old town, and its age suits the Tibetan-style interiors. The journey from Kunming on the so-called high speed train went through many tunnels, with amazing scenery along the way. Shangrila felt mysterious, and staying at the Shangrila Hotel felt right. There are a few things that need attention. The bathroom lighting was poor. The sauna wasn’t working either day, the men’s locker room needs a major facelift, the lockers are run down, and the gym equipment should be replaced. Still, it’s a charming hotel with good service. Fix those problems and you can’t go wrong.

The Tibetan decor throughout the hotel is beautiful, and there’s a pool, gym, and oxygen room to help with the high altitude. The dinner buffet has plenty of choices, though the quality could be better. Dessert makes up for some of that, with lots of options including a chocolate fountain. There are also two very cute rabbits outside the buffet restaurant that you can feed salad from the buffet. I’d recommend staying here if you’re visiting Shangri-La.
