The hotel is old and doesn't look like the photos on the websites. Guests were allowed to smoke in the lifts, and the whole place felt dusty, including the windows and the area around them. The room carpet hadn't been vacuumed. I left two hairs there on purpose, and they were still there when we returned. There was hair and some unknown dirt under the bathtub, the toilet floor hadn't been scrubbed, and the used cups weren't washed. The bedsheets and pillows weren't arranged neatly, and the sheets smelled as though they'd been used by a previous guest. The door made a noise when opening and closing.

The whole hotel smelled of cigarettes, and people were smoking in about half the rooms on every floor. I've never seen people smoking inside a gym before. It doesn't open until 8 a.m., and the equipment is from cheap local brands.

I've been back to this hotel at least four times since 2018, whenever I visit Shantou. It's a beautiful, modern place in a convenient central spot in Chenghai, Shantou. My room was large and clean, the breakfast was excellent, and the amenities were modern. The staff were friendly too. I'd highly recommend it.

On my business trip to Shantou, I stayed at the Howard Johnson hotel. The room was decent, but quite small, and the price felt high compared with hotels in even larger Chinese cities. Breakfast was one of the worst I've had, so I'd recommend skipping it if you can. Despite the hotel's claim to be international, there were no dinner options for vegans. The restaurant staff weren't accommodating and wouldn't even serve a plain bowl of rice because it wasn't on the menu.
