A flight delay out of Sanya gave me a chance to book a day-use room at the Hyatt Place Shenzhen Airport after arriving in Shenzhen. The hotel is reached from Terminal 3, door 14, via a covered walkway. Daniel checked me in promptly and stayed patient and calm while a few guests cut the line. I was surprised by how large the room was, and the bathroom was bigger than I expected too. I made it in time for breakfast, with a good mix of American and Chinese food. It was a great place to rest and get some work done. Thanks to Ms Helen and Linda for their warm hospitality.

This hotel is a good base for getting to Shenzhen World Exhibition Centre, and its position in Shenzhen airport's departure building makes transport simple, with metro, bus, and ferry options, including to Hongkong Airport. It suits non-Chinese business travelers especially well, since communication can be a common problem in China. The tradeoff is distance: it’s far from both the wholesale market and Shenzhen City.

For a late arrival, the location on Terminal 3 is handy. I was in my room just an hour after landing, thanks to how smoothly the airport, immigration, and customs in Shenzhen worked. The place was very clean, though it felt quite worn and in need of upgrades. Maybe three years of COVID-19 explains the lack of maintenance, but I expected more from the Hyatt brand. Breakfast was nice, apart from the coffee, which wasn’t the best.

The room was spacious and clean, but my stay had a couple of letdowns. Even though availability seemed plentiful, my Explorist status was overlooked at late check-in and I wasn’t upgraded. I also had to use my club access to get breakfast, yet couldn’t make use of the club facilities or happy hour. Not nice.

It’s convenient to be within a 10-minute walk of the airport, and the hotel itself is nice. The soundproofing could use work, though: there’s a highway and parking lot right outside, with cars honking constantly.
