Give this garden plenty of time, and bring water if you’re visiting in summer. The design is wild, like walking through a Chinese painting from around 500 years ago, and it had me wondering if I could come back in another season. Fall 🍁 would be awesome. Our Mandarin-speaking guide was the best I’ve met so far. She was lovely, knew the place like her own home, and helped us get great photos. Don’t go without an English-speaking docent or you’ll miss so many details and hidden design touches. The crazy thing is that this whole garden was just the very rich owner’s backyard. He didn’t live there, his family lived elsewhere on the same street. Imagine keeping a park-sized garden just to stroll around and entertain guests. This is the top garden in all of China.

It’s a lovely place to slow down and enjoy nature, with beautiful scenery, elegant bridges, ponds, and traditional buildings. Every corner feels like a painting, and it’s peaceful and very well maintained. A great spot for memorable photos, and highly recommended if you’re in the area. 🌿🏯✨

The garden is beautiful and incredibly well cared for. We went on a weekday and arrived for opening at 7:30, with tickets bought ahead through trip.com. Getting there early was worth it: we could enjoy much of the garden quietly before the larger tour groups showed up. We saw most of it in about 1 hour, which left time to visit other gardens in Suzhou. The cherry blossoms were just starting to bloom in mid-March. Definitely worth the early start.

I think this place is overrated, and I’d put it lower on the list until you’ve already explored Suzhou. During our Apr 2026 visit, many areas were being renovated, so we couldn’t fully see the gardens and bridges. It was rainy that day, which made walking unpleasant, though we’d been to the area before. I’d suggest going on a weekday, when it’s even less crowded. Otherwise, you end up following the drifting crowd, which isn’t fun.

We went to Suzhou for the day from Shanghai on the High Speed Rail, a 30 minute ride. It was a nice break from the busy city. From the rail station, a Didi to the garden costs about 15 RMB. The main part of our visit was Humble Administrator’s Garden, a classic Chinese garden built during the Tang Dynasty. We bought tickets beforehand on Trip dot com, and seniors get a 50% discount. Other things to see in Suzhou include a canal gandolo ride, Pinjiang Road for shops and food stalls, and Gate to the Orient.
