The stunning Liao Dynasty architecture and huge Guanyin statue alone make the temple of solitary joy (dule-Dule Temple） worth seeing. It dates from 984, and the inscription on it is said to have been hand painted by the poet Li Bai.

Built during the Khitan Liao dynasty, this medieval temple holds one of the few surviving Buddha sculptures from around a thousand years ago.

I was amazed by the huge statue inside. The temple has so much history, though you can't take pictures.

The 23-meter wooden Guanyin Pavilion is the main building, and inside it stands a 16-meter clay statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva. I visited Dule Temple in Jizhou, Tianjin, on October 30, 2025. Jizhou used to be called Yuyang. The temple was first built in 636, during the Zhenguan era of Emperor Taizong of Tang, then rebuilt in 984 under the Liao Dynasty. It was repaired many times during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. On ancient Yuyang Street outside, electric scooters glide by quietly, so watch out for them when walking around.
