There are some striking reminders of the hotel's past as Tianjin's No. 1 Hotel in the lobby, including old elevators, clocks, and safes. But under Zhefei's management, a few things need attention. The hotel sits below street level, and there's a sloped step with no warning sign that could easily cause someone to slip. The rooms are too dim, and the shower taps and bathtub drains don't work properly. For a place advertised as coffee-themed, two packets of Nescafé instant coffee (1+2) feel like a rather meager perk.

The downstairs Tianjin Flavor restaurant is good. The hotel has a lot of history, and although its facilities are old, they've been kept in good shape.
