The rooms were comfortable, and I had a good stay at SaiXiang Hotel in TianJin. Breakfast was generous and tasty, with fruit, cereal, bread, pastries, steamed buns, soups, and fried noodles, rice, and vegetables. The staff were kind and helpful whenever I needed something or ran into an issue. The problem was the air-conditioning in March. On some hot days my room reached 25-27°C, which made it hard for me to sleep well. I suspect the older centralized system was set to heating for winter and cooling for summer, and March was still treated as winter.

The food at the restaurants was excellent, and the staff were friendly and professional. The beds were very comfortable too. But my room was dusty and clearly outdated, the bathroom was small, and there was mildew in the shower. WiFi was slow and often cut out. They advertise the hotel as non-smoking, yet my room had a no-smoking sign beside an ashtray, and the whole place smelled of cigarette smoke. I’m surprised by the five-star reviews. Maybe those guests haven’t tried truly good hotels in China, where prices can be very low by US or European standards. This place is just adequate. I wouldn’t tell anyone they must avoid it, but be ready for what it actually offers.

The hotel itself was good, with clean rooms, friendly service, and a very nice buffet. The area around it is the downside. Staying a few weekdays should be fine, but if you’re planning a weekend, there’s not much to do or see nearby, so I’d look elsewhere.

I’ve stayed at plenty of hotels around China, and this is one of my favorites. The rooms are nice and very clean, and the Western breakfast was really good. One of the best hotels in Tianjin.
