We stayed one night while traveling through Xinjiang. The breakfast spread was very impressive, and the rooms were roomy and comfortable. My main issue was the bathroom’s clear walls, which offer no privacy. At night, using the bathroom turns on a light that shines into the room and wakes everyone else. The lobby also makes a strong impression with its very high ceiling.

The rooms were comfortable and clean, with all the amenities we needed, and everything seemed well organized. There’s easy access from different areas and to subway stations, plus the library and night market are nearby. Service was great, and breakfast had lots of choices. I’d recommend it for families.

I booked Universal Hotel myself for a one-night stop in Urumqi in August 2018, although the airline had offered a complimentary hotel. It has a luxurious feel and seems like a solid four-star place, with tidy, comfortable rooms and good restaurants, including one serving halal meals. The airport is about 20 minutes away, which is convenient. There’s a nightclub right next door, so it can get noisy. English was scarce at reception, and BILL was the one person I relied on for questions.

We were already exhausted when we arrived, and the issues made things worse. There was no bellboy, the room was unbearably hot because the air conditioning didn’t work, and the electricity kept cutting in and out. Staff suggested opening the windows, but then we could hear street and construction noise at 2:00 am. I’m not sure I’d recommend this place.

We had a very comfortable two-night stay. A few local restaurants nearby serve authentic food, though the hotel is a bit far from the city center. Reception service was quite slow.
