Dangkou Ancient Town Hotel Wuxi - Mgallery Collection

Getting straight from the hotel to Dangkou ancient town was very convenient. I also appreciated some of the young staff's warmth, especially Linda helping with a late checkout, Tom & Hank bringing our bags and seeing us off, the F&B guy explaining the limited breakfast options and toasting bread, A-yi making noodles with care on New Year’s day, Lucy remembering our room number and coffee preference, and Xiao Xie and the enthusiastic gym desk staff. A few members of the team seemed promising, and those personal touches meant a lot beyond the usual hotel service. The room faced the garage and was opposite two mahjong rooms, even though occupancy was low. It made me wonder if we'd been given special "treatment." Basic supplies kept running out, or perhaps the pumps weren't working: hand soap, hand cream, shower gel, and even the scale batteries. Breakfast was very basic. There was a little more variety on New Year’s Day, but still nothing to praise, and the glasses and plates needed better cleaning. I understand trying to reduce waste when occupancy is low, but a semi-buffet with a salad bar and some à la carte options might have avoided leaving guests shortchanged. The young team often lacked energy and interaction. Thoughtful, warm exchanges are what make a luxury hotel memorable. The staff seemed livelier only on our departure day, when more guests were around. And the “pre-arrival communication” people mention on review platforms never happened. If that's reserved for Accor higher status members or KOLs, I can understand different treatment. I stayed four nights and left disappointed. A friend in the industry had strongly recommended the hotel, so I arrived in Dangkou for New Year’s in high spirits. Instead I left feeling as gloomy as the drizzling weather. My birthday there was quite cold, in a quiet hotel.
