Getting to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda was exceptionally easy compared with other sites. I took Xi'an Metro Line 3 or 4 to Dayanta Station (Giant Wild Goose Pagoda Station), used Exit B, and followed the signs to the North Square, just a few minutes away. The pagoda is an experience you shouldn't miss if you're interested in history. It's a monumental seven-story building within the Da Ci’en Temple complex, and to me it gives an even deeper sense of history than the City Wall. It stands as a symbol of the Tang Dynasty's golden age and Xuanzang's journey. Built in 652 AD, it was meant to safely house the Buddhist scriptures (sutras) and relics Xuanzang brought back from India after his seventeen-year pilgrimage along the ancient Silk Road. I had it on my buckle list, and seeing this testament to religious devotion and early Chinese engineering was special. It's survived numerous earthquakes over the centuries. The grounds of Da Ci’en Temple are peaceful and beautifully maintained. Take time to wander through the halls, look at the stone steles with historical texts, including two with writings by Emperor Taizong and Gaozong, and observe the traditional rituals still practiced there. If you stay until evening, the North Square fountain show is massive and spectacular, with music, lights, and water set against the illuminated pagoda. Check the seasonal times, as shows are often around 8:30 PM/9:00 PM.

There are temples and artifacts to see, along with an area full of restaurants and snacks. The complete works of Tripitaka Master Xuanzang are on display, which is a must-see. You can easily spend a few hours here, exploring this wonderful place full of history. Entry to the pagoda itself requires a separate ticket.
Da Yen Ta brings tourism and shopping together in an interesting way. There are malls built around a popular attraction, and photographers line up by the wall offering photoshoots and Tang Dynasty outfits for rent. Other countries could learn from that approach.
There was plenty to explore around the Wild Goose Pagoda, so paying 10 Yuan to enter the grounds felt worthwhile. Depending on the season, you may also catch the 50 varieties of peonies in bloom from mid-April to mid-May. We skipped the extra fee to go inside the pagoda itself because we had to get back to our tour group.
The gardens and flowers are lovely, and the temple is clean and well looked after. I enjoyed the calm atmosphere, especially watching some older men play Chinese chess. It's a historically important Xi'An site with an ancient pagoda, and I could have spent hours there enjoying the peace. After sunset, Tang Everbright City just outside turns into a huge shopping area, bigger than Singapore's orchard road, with souvenir shops, cafes, and luxury spas or massages for tired feet. The area also has the big brand hotels, so it's a prime place to stay if you want to enjoy it.
