Shangri-La Xian

The staff were consistently helpful and quick to assist or answer questions about the hotel and area, although sometimes they gave us conflicting information about policies. We had to double-check details about services and amenities, which was a minor hassle. The classic Chinese architecture gives the Shangri-La Hotel, Xian a grand, traditional look. It opened in 2007 and was recently built, but this style isn't really my preference since I tend to like more contemporary design. My room was clean, though quite basic for the price, without the luxurious details or modern amenities I'd expect at this level. The shower floor was too flat, so water drained slowly and kept pooling around my feet. That felt like a design oversight and made showering less comfortable. It's an impressive-looking hotel with a culturally rich atmosphere, and the helpful staff partly made up for the basic room and shower issue.

The rooms were spacious enough for two and the bed was comfortable, but they felt dated and the air seemed a little dusty. The outside of the hotel and the lobby look grand and welcoming. The location is relatively quiet, though there aren't many convenience stores or food choices nearby. Service was okay. We were told at check-in that our group would have nearby rooms, but when we arrived they were far apart. Staff should pay more attention when helping with arrangements like that.

Oscar did a great job setting up our tours, and Julia was attentive during our stay. The staff were warm and friendly, which made the visit feel special. I came to Xi'an at short notice to see the Terra Cotta Soldiers and only had two nights, so I asked Shangri-La Hotel to arrange a day tour. The concierge and tour arrangements went well beyond what I expected. I enjoyed the classic Shangri-La feel, especially the lovely birds in the lobby. Our room was comfortable, and the bathroom had strong water pressure and plenty of hot water. The turndown soup at the end of the day was a nice local touch, and I slept well. Breakfast was wonderful, with lots of local choices. I'd happily return to Shangri-La Hotel Xi'an and recommend it.

We had a lovely city view, and the room had universal outlets by the bed on one side and at the desk. Lighting was reasonable. Inside, the rooms were spacious and comfortable, with a comfy bed and pillows; the bathroom had both a tub and a separate shower. The large lobby felt inviting. Breakfast at the buffet had plenty of choice, and service was very good.
