After dark, the river looks completely different: colored lights and effects conceal the old structures that are visible in the daytime. It’s a pretty cool spot by day, too. Nearby shops rent traditional outfits to lots of young women, who pose for professional photographers or take pictures on their phones against the nighttime scenery.

There are restaurants, cafes, bars, and souvenir shops all around Jingxing Phoenix Hotel, so finding something to take home is easy. One local snack is sesame peanut brittle. Nearby, a shop had a large wooden cutting board where a man pounded dough made from roasted peanuts, toasted sesame seeds, and caramel with a big wooden mallet, then cut it into small pieces. It’s sweet and simple, and seriously addictive in that Chinese peanut brittle way. The hotel itself is a nice place to stay in Fenghuang town. It’s easy to reach and convenient for getting around, with the whole city walkable from there. You can also take a boat to some attractions. The room was nice, the hospitality was good, and the price quite affordable. You can book a tour around Fenghuang through the hotel, and the host is happy to help find the right trip.
