The airport is a good distance from the city center, though transport links are strong. Metro Line 14 goes to the high-speed rail station, where you can transfer to Line 2 for the Bell Tower area. Shuttle buses are another affordable, dependable way to reach major landmarks, and sleep pods or capsule hotels in the terminals work well for a few hours during a long layover. Terminal 5's Tang Dynasty-inspired design gives the airport a palace-like feel and is a real highlight. The West Airport Museum inside it is worth a visit too, with more than a hundred authentic artifacts found during construction. Local Shaanxi food stalls offer biang biang noodles and roujiamo, a nice way to try the region's food. The airport feels like a gateway to the old Silk Road, and the newer terminal adds to its cultural character. Allow at least three hours for an international departure. The airport is huge, especially with Terminal 5, and the walking and security take time. English signs are common, but it's a good idea to have your destination written in Chinese for taxi drivers, since many don't speak English. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with an international card before arrival, as smaller airport vendors are moving away from cash and may not take foreign physical cards. Check which terminal your flight uses too, because getting between the older terminals and Terminal 5 takes extra time.

Breakfast was okay, and the hotel itself was quiet, clean, with large rooms. It's a handy place in the domestic part of Terminal 2. From the departures level, look for the entrance between sections J and G, where the airline counters are. Go down the corridor to the hotel's third floor. Reception is on the first floor.

My stay at the hotel managed by Sheraton Group was the one bright spot. The staff there kept service standards high, and their professionalism and hospitality stood out against the rest of the trip. The other experiences left Xi’an feeling uncomfortable and gave me a poor impression. Vendors were pushy, impolite and had bad attitudes. One tried to sell food that was close to expiring while presenting it as a fast-selling item. The airport duty-free store was especially disappointing. Shaanxi is known for baijiu, but the store had little local spirit selection. A saleswoman said it was the only shop in the airport and that they didn't have what I wanted. Five minutes later, I found the exact item in another store. zzzzzzzz zzz.

At about 10 p.m. the airport was pretty quiet, and the bathrooms were very clean. There were water dispensers with paper cups. For a Didi into town, follow the Taxi signs and then the e-hauling signs to the pickup area. On arrival, remember to complete the immigration card at one of the machines just before immigration. They offer many languages.

They treat you like cattle, as usual. Then they confiscated two power banks made by a Chinese company in China, just because they didn't have the Chinese CCC mark. The nerve.
