It’s an impressive facility, but access to the dam itself is limited, and you only see it from the side. The views aren’t very good for photos and such. I also wish there had been pictures or recreations of the power generation facilities, since it’s the largest hydro project at 22 gigawatts.

Seeing this was a real privilege. It’s an impressive manmade structure, close to the hotel, and a marvelous display of the Chinese people’s skill, vision, and determination. A project on this scale inevitably has huge complications, but it seems to have been managed as thoroughly as possible. In my opinion, it belongs alongside the Great Wall. China’s builders are highly regarded, and I believe many countries are already lining up major projects for them, from roads and bridges to dams, power plants, and airports. I feel lucky to have seen it up close.

This place was on my bucket list, and you really have to see it. It’s massive. Don’t miss it. It’s amazing how they built this structure and got it working perfectly.

What an engineering achievement. I’m sad that it displaced so many people and submerged so much of the gorges. I wish we could have seen the area before the dam was built.
