I’m honestly worried about Hyatt's quality control. The biggest issue for me is the design. It feels like a copy of the current trendy hotel style, with little originality or Hyatt identity. The wood veneer rooms could easily be mistaken for Marriott or InterContinental, and the overall look comes across as somewhat cheap. StudioH, based in Shenzhen, worked local culture, Southeast Asian elements, and coastal imagery into the design, but the heavy green tones and “four-water courtyard” layout don’t feel fresh. The drop-off lobby and 16th-floor sky lobby use the same design language. Getting between elevators is cumbersome, and the strong renovation smell could bother people sensitive to odors or guests travelling with children. The air conditioning also runs unusually cold, apparently to cover that smell. The hotel opened in February this year, during the CNY travel peak, as the first new international chain hotel to open in the Greater Bay Area that new year. It’s in Zhuguang International Tower, in Gongbei, Zhuhai’s oldest developed business district. The location is a major advantage: Gongbei Checkpoint, Qingmao Checkpoint, and Zhuhai Railway Station are all about a five-minute walk away, right by the Zhuhai-Macau border. The owner, Zhuguang Group, is a Zhuhai municipal state-owned enterprise and isn’t affiliated with the Chu brothers’ companies. Despite the close partnership between Hopson Development and Hyatt, and the resemblance between the Guanghe Hui complex downstairs and Hopson malls, they’re unrelated. Guanghe Hui is expected to open in May, but is still under construction with barriers around it. There are 278 rooms on floors 17 through 29. Standard rooms are all 41 m², with categories including city, Macau, and sea views. Of the 22 suites, 12 are 61 m² Regency Club Macau View Suites. The Macau view is limited, though, with only glimpses of the Grand Lisboa and Macau Tower on clear days. I’d recommend the sea-view rooms more. The rooms themselves are mediocre. The facilities on the 15th floor include a gym with a 270-degree sea view and a full range of equipment. Next to it is a 25-meter heated pool. Its raised design leaves the ceiling fairly low, which can feel oppressive on cloudy days. The Regency Club is the highlight, facing south over the sea and offering drinks and snacks all day. At evening happy hour, there are six hot dishes, including freshly made shrimp wonton noodles and steamed spare ribs with black bean sauce. They’re high quality and substantial enough for a proper meal. The cafe breakfast, including its wonton noodles, is far worse than the Regency Club’s. At around CNY 800 a night, the hotel costs notably more than nearby competitors, with InterContinental around CNY 700 and Hyatt Regency Hengqin around CNY 500. I don’t see a clear advantage in the hardware, service, or experience to make up for the price, so value for money is relatively low. Chinese hotel design seems stuck in a cycle of similar looks. Whichever design firms are involved, the visual style keeps repeating, weakening brand distinction and leaving guests with fewer memorable experiences.

A brand new hotel in Zhuhai, near Gongbei, and in an excellent location.

A really nice, clean hotel. Highly recommend it.

Getting around is convenient from this location near Gongbei Port. The toilet is separate from the bathroom, which is a bit inconvenient. The bathtub feels luxurious, but the floor gets wet easily and can become slippery, which is a safety concern.

Being so close to Gongbei Port makes the location super convenient. There’s a shopping mall downstairs, and the newly opened hotel has been beautifully renovated. I really like the room design, it’s exactly my taste. The 15th-floor wellness center is a big plus, with full equipment, a swimming pool, sauna, and even a steam room 😍
