Hotel Stein Colonial

The staff were kind and worked hard, but the rest of the experience was awful. I’d booked seven nights months ahead, looking forward to staying in what had once been a beautiful family home in Cali. I knew it was a small three-star hotel and kept my expectations modest. Our first room had ants all over the bathroom, and when we found one on the bed we called staff. Spraying poison where they were coming in brought out hundreds more, so we had to move. The next room was ant-free, but the toilet barely flushed. We were moved again the following morning, then moved yet again two nights later for another family’s arrival, and eventually sent back to the room with the “fixed toilet.” At 2 a.m. its hose burst and flooded the room. My husband was soaked while shutting off the water to keep the rest of the hotel from flooding. By then it was 3 a.m., and our next room had an awful bed. After only a few hours without sleep, we checked out two days early, on Christmas Eve, and had to find another hotel instead of spending time with family. The manager/owner offered no apology or compensation, acted aggressively, and treated a refund for the unused nights like a favor. A straightforward professional apology would have helped, but I left feeling dismissed and disrespected. Maybe, as the manager suggested, I was unlucky, but next time it could happen to you. I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

The owner and staff were so nice, and the room was really spacious. We also liked the clean pool and the well-organized feel of this beautiful colonial-style hotel. Breakfast was nice too, with four types to choose from.

Waking up to coffee and breakfast in this quiet, charming historic building was a pleasure. The hotel staff were very attentive, and my five-year-old son loved having a small playground on site. If you’re visiting Cali as a tourist, stop by the official TI across the street to plan your visit. We had a pleasant experience from beginning to end, and I’d recommend Stein without hesitation.

The small pool is a nice place to cool off after a hot day, and the public areas have an old colonial look. I’ve stayed here a few times because it feels safe with a guard at the gate. The rooms aren’t luxurious, but they’re clean and comfortable enough, and the hotel is a quiet break from busy downtown Cali. Air conditioning costs extra, but I find it worth paying for. Breakfast is good, freshly made, and served quickly. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
