Casa Hotel El Compadre

The hammocks overlooking the valley were nice, and the location is central, just a minute from the main square. But this was by far the worst hotel of our three-week trip, and I was glad to leave. The Lonely Planet review seems out of date. You can get much better for 160,000 a night in Colombia. Before we even got to our room, the woman showing us in warned that we wouldn't sleep well because it faced the street and there was a bank holiday festival. She was right. Both nights were awful: loud music, shouting, horses and sirens came through a wooden door with a window opening instead of a proper window, which also didn't feel secure. The toilet blocked. When we asked for help, we were blamed for putting paper in it, which we hadn't done. Someone eventually plunged it, leaving dirty toilet water on the seat and bathroom floor. That was especially unsanitary because the bathroom wasn't really separate from the bedroom. We had to pack and change rooms even though we had only one day in Filandia. The hotel was empty that night, yet our replacement room also faced the street, so we had another sleepless night. The Wi-Fi was intermittent, breakfast was very beige, and no one offered advice about exploring the area. At checkout, staff were dismissive and rude when we asked for a discount after the ordeal. Then the card machine didn't work, so we had to rush to an ATM to avoid missing our bus.

The place and the service were welcoming and very good. A bar nearby played very loud music during our stay, though, so I couldn't give it five stars.
