Finca Hotel Loma Verde

The property looked beautiful when we arrived, and we were the only guests. We were quoted 120,000 pesos. It advertises TV, Wi-Fi, and other amenities, but quite a few things didn't work during our two-night stay. There was no cable for either day. A night worker came in to photograph the TV, basically implying the owner hadn't paid the bill. Once Saturday brought more guests, the cable surprisingly came back. Wi-Fi was unreliable, slow, and kept dropping, so trying to work on vacation could take a lot of time. We also had no hot water at first. The groundskeeper/maintenance person got it working after about 30 minutes on the first morning. I'm a plumber in the United States, and after checking the system and asking about it, I found rooms 4, 5, and 6 downstairs in the main building share a very old natural gas tank with the laundry. The pilot light won't stay lit. On the second night, rain came through the roof onto the foot of our bed and the floor. I had to move the bed, mop it up, and take off the blanket to dry. The lady working there was actually the best part. She called the owner to report all the problems. The owner then tried to raise the price to 150,000 pesos a night and offer a 10,000-peso discount, which would still have meant charging us 140,000 per night. That was 40,000 pesos more than our quote, and I refused to pay. There was no discount for the problems; instead, I felt the owner was trying to extort more money. Beware. If you decide to stay, pay in advance. This was the first place where we didn't do that. In Colombia, check that everything in your hotel room works. My wife is from Bogota, and we've stayed in many hotels and fincas in the cafe region over the past two weeks. This was by far the worst experience. I recommend foreign visitors stay elsewhere. Don't be fooled by the beautiful exterior. There are many other places to try in this area.

The meals were excellent, and the pool was well maintained. The little cabanas have private or shared bathrooms, though the water wasn't quite hot.

A good deal for what you pay.
