Hotel HM Caribe

Getting around was easy: there’s a bus stop right beside the hotel, taxis are easy to find, and downtown Santa Marta is about a 20-minute drive. It’s also close to the airport and within walking distance of Playa Dormida. The room was very clean and had what I needed for the price. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the stay exceeded my expectations. It’s clearly not a luxury hotel, but the service was excellent.

The only thing that didn’t work well was the air conditioning. I estimate it’s 12,000 BTU, which doesn’t seem enough to cool a room over 40 square meters. Otherwise, I was happy with the prices and service, and felt I got good value for my money.

The service partly made up for the physical problems, and the owner and staff were nice. Still, the apartment smelled damp and musty, there was a gas leak, and the pool was often a little dirty with too many insects. The hotel is still under construction, and there was a lot of dirt outside, on the windows, and under the beds and furniture. Guests also need a clear warning about the area. People who picked me up asked how I could be alone waiting for a taxi or bus after 6 pm. I usually stay in Zuana and have had no trouble walking around at 6 or 7 pm, but here, even while we were looking for a taxi at the pedestrian bridge in Playa Dormida, a local stopped and offered us a ride. They said carrying a backpack there at 7:30 pm could put us at risk of a knife attack, which they said was common in the area. Given the price, facilities, and location, the hotel could be one of the best in its category if they improve the cleaning and make guests more aware of the safety concerns so they don’t walk around unaware.

The staff were so friendly and ready to help with anything that I’m giving this place five stars, even though it’s being renovated and the beach is a bit far. There’s a pool and a great view over the city, which made it a good stay whether you’re on your own, with a partner, or with friends. I’d definitely come back.
