This colonial-style hotel is easily one of my top three stays. I can’t find the words for how magnificent it is. It feels like they have everything. Honestly, just look at my pictures. I can’t.

The rooms look out over the valley and Villa de Leyva below, and the hillside gardens make the hotel a peaceful retreat. They’re elegantly simple, very comfortable, and exceptionally clean. Everyone on staff was wonderful, friendly, and ready to help. I first visited Hospederia Duruelo a couple of times as a child on family vacations, and I returned nearly 30 years later to find it still amazing. It was built in the 70s as a retreat for Carmelite friars, and it still feels like a haven.

Up on the mountain above the village, it’s a nice location. The restaurant food was amazing, and everyone was super friendly, patient with our language barrier, and helpful. They found ways to communicate with us, and I really enjoyed my stay.

The location was great, and the staff were wonderful. I stayed recently for a wedding nearby in Villa de Leyva, and the property itself is very pretty. Still, the price didn’t feel justified. The walls and doors are paper thin, and loud talking or singing from other guests woke us early every day. The beds were mediocre, and there were lots of bugs in the room. Renovations are underway, and the rooms could definitely use some upgrades. All told, it was a good experience.
