Staying in a treehouse was really cool, and the comfort was better than I expected. The room had AC, warm shower water, and drinkable tap water. Vene the standard room has two showers, one of them outdoors. The forest location is lovely. The night safari was fun, with some nice frogs to see, and the included canoes were good for the kids since the small pond is easy to paddle. We barely used the terrace in front of our room because of all the mosquitoes. I also missed hearing the sounds of a real jungle, since this isn’t primary forest.

The staff made our stay extra memorable. When our ride didn’t show up, someone from Maquenque kindly drove our family all the way to our next hotel in Arenal in his pickup truck. They also looked after us well at meals as vegetarians. The food was good, and the guides on the organized activities were knowledgeable. We spent three nights at Maquenque in November, after a Costa Rican tour specialist recommended it. It became my favorite place of our two weeks in Costa Rica, and felt really special. I was a little disappointed not to get a tree house, but the cabin beside the restaurant was lovely and comfortable, with a beautiful view over the lake. It was very clean, too. Early each morning, we got to see all the Coatis running across the path to our cabin for breakfast, such an amazing sight and surprise. We did several activities, especially enjoying the night walk and jungle walk. We saw so many animals and birds, and loved watching the birds from the restaurant. Just writing this makes me want to return. With the beautiful surroundings and such great staff, we couldn’t have asked for a better first stay in Costa Rica.

The staff were probably the best part of our visit. They were consistently helpful and courteous while giving us space. Edgar seemed to genuinely enjoy his job and took great care of our family. Hector suggested places to stop on the way to the Pacific beaches, and as we left, a kind gentleman pointed out an iguana and howler monkeys while helping us back to the parking lot. There were many other thoughtful moments, too. We loved our two nights here, and the winding trip from San Jose was well worth it. The boat ride to the lodge was a nice touch. Our treehouse was wonderful, and we could sit listening to nature at any time of day. We’re not serious birders, but in our short stay we saw 20 different bird species, plus agoutis, coatis, an iguana, spider monkeys, and howler monkeys. Feeders by the restaurant dining area kept us entertained while we ate. The breakfast buffet was generous and delicious. I liked the wood-fired pizza at lunch, and enjoyed the tuna filet, seafood soup, and salmon at dinner. For guests staying more than a couple of days, maquenque could consider adding more variety, such as a changing daily special. The pool looks shallower than it is, and the area is a little slick, but it was a very enjoyable dip. We loved our time here and hope to return soon. I’d highly recommend it.

The staff were so friendly, and everyone should be proud of how well they looked after us. No other hotel on our Costa Rica trip fell short, but this one stood out. The location and accommodation are unique, and there are trips and activities, wildlife, good food and coffee, plus the chocolate experience, which you shouldn’t miss. If this place is on your radar, just book it. You won’t regret it.

We spent five nights in a tree house and had an amazing, peaceful stay. Meals were leisurely, right by the pond, where we spotted many kinds of birds, coatis, caimans, agoutis, and even a tapir. Our kids loved horseback riding with Carlos. From the horses we saw Scarlett macaws and spider monkeys, along with beautiful views of Rio San Carlos. Everyone on staff was helpful, accommodating, knowledgeable, and lovely to be around. Edgar was especially kind to our family and the kids. My husband and Carlos had lots of conversations about animals in the restaurant, sharing their love of wildlife. What a special place. Highly recommend!
