I was nervous about spending so long in a hostel for the first time, but Akih felt so comfortable that I kept coming back to visit even after I’d left. It’s cute, comfortable, and consistently clean. Gabi, who runs it, and Laila, the host, were especially welcoming and helpful, with lots of information about hostel basics and local spots. The people there made Akih a lovely place to gather. I’m going to miss everyone.

The common areas at Akih Hostel make it easy to get to know other travelers, and there’s a fully equipped kitchen too. Rooms are spotless and comfortable, with secure lockers for valuables. It’s only a short walk to the beach, and guests can rent surfboards or use the yoga deck. The staff were welcoming and knew the area well, always ready to help. I really recommend Akih Hostel.

There’s a lot to like here: the property is clean, attractive, well maintained, and shaded by healthy trees. The dorms get comfortably air-conditioned at night, the kitchen is decent and has a huge commercial fridge, and Gabi, the owner and manager, speaks very good English. He came across as genuinely gentle and professional, and the women staying there all seemed completely at ease around him. The vibe is peaceful, with enough distance from the main road, and the 11pm (23:00) quiet hours are respected. Evenings can still be mellow and social, with some partying. The closest shop is only really good for snacks and beer. Super Ronny's has better prices and selection, but getting there means a long, hot walk along the chaotic, often smelly main road. At least the big fridge means you don't have to shop as often. My one real drawback was the dorm setup. The fully enclosed, three-level bunks felt claustrophobic over a longer stay at my age. When I was younger, I wouldn't have minded. Even smaller adults can't sit up in bed, and there's no spare floor space, so careless roommates leaving things around can make it hard to get through. It didn't happen often, though: there are large wooden shelves for suitcases and big backpacks, hallway lockers for smaller packs, and lots of high, close-spaced clothesline over clean gravel along the narrow side yard.

I liked it enough to extend my stay twice, and each time was just as enjoyable. The hostel is lovely and very clean, with a nice outdoor space and a kitchen that's kept in good shape. The owner and volunteers were so welcoming, friendly, and helpful. They also put real effort into shared meals and cooking nights, which bring everyone together and make for a warm atmosphere.

The dorm air conditioning was some of the best I’ve had in Costa Rica, and the staff were friendly and always ready to answer questions or help out. It’s in a quiet part of Santa Teresa, with the beach and town center both a short walk down one street. The social atmosphere was great too. 10/10, I’d recommend it.
