Before coming, read the description carefully and ask questions so you know what to expect. Eco farms was a surprise for us, though the property is beautiful, clearly cared for, and still being improved. Each cabin is hand built and charmingly rustic, with lots of nature around you. The hosts are lovely and look after you. You can harvest fresh coconut, make chocolate, cook homegrown yucca, and feed chickens. They bake their own bread, have farm fresh eggs and homegrown fruit, and there are often toucans nearby. Sleeping to rain and birdsong really does feel like a rare chance to get closer to native life. The place runs on solar power, so what you can power depends on your cabin. Ours had lights and just one USB port from a car power inverter, with no outlets. Walking between the cabin and main house can mean pitch darkness, which felt scary. Bathing uses collected rainwater, and you’re surrounded by nature. If you have kids or need comforts like hot water, this may not suit you. Bugs are part of the deal. There was some netting in our cabin, but gaps around the woodwork and windows let in ants and moths, and mosquitoes if you’re unlucky. You will get bitten by something. The bedroom and bathroom have doors, but the living area is entirely open to nature. Getting there also takes some driving. Bahia Drake is hard to reach, and Los Planes has steeper roads and less asphalt. A capable car is essential. Our Hilux did fine, but a less suited vehicle such as a Crosstrek or Vitara would need a good driver to manage the terrain. Also, don’t pee in the shower. Ants swarm it and the nearby areas, and they bite.
