Wilbur and his wife made us feel completely at ease, and they're truly good people who love sharing their land. After walking us to two waterfalls, Wilbur left us at the last one so we could swim by ourselves in our own rainforest waterfall. He had also picked us up and told us about the area while showing us around his beautiful property and explaining the hydroelectric system. Then he and his wife cooked one of the best meals we had in Costa Rica. We went to Naguala on a day trip arranged through our resort, and it was the highlight of our stay.

The horseback ride was a real disappointment. It was off site, and after two hours riding on dirt roads to the beach, we were told we couldn't ride along the beach, even though that was how the tour had been advertised. Zip lining, by contrast, was well organized and the staff paid attention to safety. Brian and Eric drove us to the tours we took. Brian, our Canadian host, was attentive and knew a lot about the local habitat. The other four staff members spoke very little English, but managed to communicate well, and the meals were nicely presented. Our cabana was modest but clean, surrounded by trees and shrubs, with birds singing nearby. The two waterfalls on the property were something to see, and I enjoyed yoga with the sound of water in the background. It's a quiet, peaceful spot in the jungle, and we had a pleasant stay with friendly, knowledgeable staff.

After Wilber showed us the waterfalls, he left us alone there in paradise and told us when to be back for lunch. His wife Carla only had time for a quick hello, but her English seemed very good, and I can say her cooking is incredible. We came from a nearby resort for an excursion to Naguala, and Wilber picked us up and showed us how to reach the falls. He's a gem, so friendly that he even stopped to introduce us to a neighbor hand-cutting 1x6 boards from a fallen tree. He explained that in Costa Rica you need a permit to cut even a tree that's already down, because the trees are so well protected. I love this country. If your Drake Bay area lodge offers a Naguala tour, take it. Wilber and the place are fantastic. Next time we're in the Osa, we'll try to stay in one of their cabins and get to know them better.

Looking to swim in clear pools beneath waterfalls, relax, watch birds, or see wildlife around you? Naguala is a lovely place to get away from it all, and I'd book an extra day or two just to enjoy the property. Pura Vida. It's about 6 km outside Drake Bay, on 37.2 hectares of rainforest, with waterfalls and a platform lounge overlooking the largest one. That distance gives you a break from motorcycle and quad noise and dust, while making Naguala a gateway to Corcovado. The family who owns it is very friendly and helpful. Meals are fresh, homemade, and included with a stay. You can do Qi Gong or yoga in the morning or afternoon, get a Thai massage, or relax in a hammock. They can arrange the same tours offered in Drake to Corcovado and Cano Island, as well as zip lining and horses that come right to Naguala. Waterfall tours and jungle and river hikes are included when you stay there.

The owners and manager really focus on your experience and privacy, and their hospitality made us feel we could trust them. Brian, the general manager and organizer, was especially helpful with last-minute tours on less than 24 hours' notice, lodging advice, and just about anything else. He communicates well and is easy to reach. Thanks to him and the family for looking after us this past week. The lodge is in a special remote spot on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, about a 25-minute 4x4 ride from Drake Bay. They can arrange pickup from town or the nearby airport, and provide transport for people arriving by boat or plane. The private standalone cabins are well suited to the tropical forest, with hot and cold running water, bathrooms, bedding, fans, and electricity. Brian can organize Corcovado National Park, snorkeling, night jungle tours, and the wonderful waterfalls only accessible through the lodge. The local family serves excellent Costa Rican breakfasts and dinners, and drinks are available on request. The place is brilliant and special, and the prices felt far too low for such incredible hospitality. If it's available, don't wait to book.
