The staff were really friendly, and the bike rental was decent. The rest of our stay was a disappointment. We arrived over Easter Weekend, and although check-in is at 2pm, delays meant we didn’t get into our room until 5. Our 6 bed dorm had pod beds, which is a nice idea, but they’re cheaply made and creak like crazy when you move. The room was very small, even with air conditioning. I found a bundle of hair beside my mattress, and my sheets were stained. The upstairs bathroom was honestly vile and wasn’t cleaned during our stay. There was toothpaste all over the sink, hair everywhere, and the toilet made me feel sick. A dead cockroach sat on the floor outside our dorm from check-in to check-out, so it didn’t look like things were being cleaned properly.

The dorms were tiny, almost like coffins, and smelled unpleasant. The atmosphere felt off during my stay, with little happening and guests not really talking to one another. Reception staff seemed unmotivated and weren’t much help, which added to an underwhelming experience.

The dorms were so small there was nowhere to get changed, and the staff were unfriendly. I’d choose a cheaper hostel with more space and a nicer community feel.

I liked how many ways there were to save money, since my private room felt like a clean, well-kept hotel room and I could still use the kitchen and other hostel facilities. It was across the street from the main hostel, and the location was really good. They put a lot into social activities, so nights can get loud if you’re introverted and more of a homebody. I was usually wiped out from hiking, so it didn’t bother me much, but earplugs could help. Thanks for hosting me.

Casa Wolaba is right in central Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica, close to local eateries and the beach. It has dorms and private rooms with air conditioning, plus a spacious shared kitchen and a cozy lounge with hammocks. Daily social events give the hostel a lively, friendly feel, and guests can use the pool at partner hostel El Clan across the street. Many people appreciate the cleanliness and the chance to meet other travelers, though the social scene may suit younger guests more. Bring a padlock for the room lockers, and earplugs may be useful if noise bothers you, since events happen regularly. It’s a lively, enjoyable base for experiencing Puerto Viejo. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆
