Hotel Maguey

The owner seemed much less able to communicate in English when a problem came up. The power went out in the early hours and stayed off until we were checking out, while noise outside our room kept us up through the night. The shower was just a freezing cold hose pipe, and the pool was too filthy to even think about swimming in. The hotel itself was filthy too. Breakfast cost extra, and the small serving was unpalatable. I hadn’t had one bad cup of coffee in three weeks travelling around Costa Rica, but this place managed it. I’ve stayed in some real dives in some third world countries, and this hotel really took the biscuit. If I could give it zero stars, I would. Do yourself a favour and look elsewhere.

The pool and grounds looked neglected, and the room hadn’t been cleaned properly. There was hair and trash around, and the linens had already been used instead of freshly made. The room itself was dirty and very outdated, and I didn’t feel comfortable there at all. The hostess was unfriendly and disastrous. It felt like a complete rip-off for the money. Absolutely NOT RECOMMENDED.

We only stayed one night, and the room itself was very nice with a lovely balcony 😻. But we couldn’t sleep well because the air conditioning broke. The room light also didn’t work, as if there were a short circuit. I think they should check rooms before handing them over.

Breakfast is available if you let them know a day ahead. There’s also a restaurant and bar across the street with great food. The property has an outdoor pool and sits among nature, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. A very good budget-friendly choice.
