Sunset Rooms

It’s a cheap room, and that’s about all you should expect. We’d booked two rooms overlooking the river, but one couldn’t be used because its ceiling had fallen in. The replacement room smelled really bad, and the little bar wasn’t open either. We left a day early just to get away from the place.

The lagoon view from the end of the main strip was amazing, and it’s a perfect spot for sunset. I stayed three nights in April 2023, though the noise was a problem: loud until midnight or 1 AM, then music again by 8 AM. The shower was poor, with no temperature control and weak pressure. At 7 PM on Saturday, the hosts weren’t there for check-in, so we more or less let ourselves in. They don’t speak English, which is fine since I don’t speak Spanish. It’s cheap, so you probably get what you pay for.

I stayed in the hotel for a few days and found my room quiet and comfortable, with hot water and AC. The family running the place is so sweet and friendly, and made me feel welcome with just the right balance of service and privacy. The place is super chill, too. Come for the sunset and stay for the mixology, especially the arguably best caipirina in town, plus about 30 other drinks.

Marcia was an excellent host and helped us find the tours we wanted at a very economical price. They also offered free coffee in the mornings, and made tea on request for another guest who didn’t drink coffee, a big plus for a caffeine junkie like me. We stayed two nights in December. Our room was clean and more than big enough for two, and the terrace had a lovely sunset view with colorful reflections on the water. Given the very low price, I expected something much simpler, especially in a remote place like Tortuguero. I don’t understand the two bad comments here. Maybe those people aren’t used to a remote tropical rainforest, or don’t even know Costa Rica.
