The trip takes a long time from anywhere, and there’s no public transport. Once you arrive, though, the location is the real draw: miles and miles of beach to yourself and magnificent sunsets. The hotel and food weren’t anything special, and there isn’t much else to do. A few minutes up the road there’s a marina with a Wi-Fi hotspot. Guided tours in the National Park can be booked, but they start at the entrance, many kilometers away. This was in 2019.

We arrived to find the hotel had been closed for more than 3 months, even though we’d booked and prepaid through an agency. The taxi driver, who said he knew the place well and went there regularly, had charged us 100 dollars for the ride. Nobody told us the hotel was closed, not even the guard at the park entrance. I suspect the guard had been bribed by the driver. Then the driver wanted another 40 dollars to take us to La Gorda, although that was on his way back anyway. What a scam. It ruined the first few days of our vacation.

I had a great time watching the midget wrestling. I bet on the shorter guy and won $500.

The rooms are amazing, and being so far out lets you enjoy the wildness of the reserve: deserted beaches, green water, and iguanas, crabs, and turtles. Getting there is complicated without a rental car, and food choices are limited because of the remoteness. There’s only one restaurant, with four tables. At night, watch out for the sand fleas, they bite like crazy. Still, put on mosquito repellent and head to the beach. The light pollution is low, and it was the best night sky I’ve ever seen, even after seeing the Sahara Desert at night. Daylon, the receptionist who helped us, made the experience even better. I fell in love with him, and I don’t mean that metaphorically. He told us we were on a beach pirates had once visited, and that we’d be seeing the same view Christopher Columbus saw. How wonderful. Rest, relax, and Daylon. Hehe ❤️
