I’ve been in the area 12 times, and the weather is usually nice, though January 2018 was oppressively humid and rainy. The hotel is a budget place that mostly draws Canadians looking for a short sunny break or a longer stay, and you’ll see some of the same people back each year. Some Cubans come in groups on weekends. There have been improvements since 2017, including hot water that’s almost regular now, a new patio, and better food. The long-time staff feel like family. It won’t suit everyone: you have to put up with plenty of irritations, including bugs, dirty pillows, flies in the bathroom, prostitution, and so on.

There’s a cactus garden down the road with every kind of cactus that grows on the island. The hotel itself is tucked away in the mountains, so if you’re after solitude, this is the place.

My mother died at the resort in 2015. I found it a very bad place, full of criminals and cover-ups. There were no answers and no compassion.
