The fresh air and wonderful view make reaching the top feel worth it. Getting there means walking up a lot of steps, though. It's a bit like life: you have to keep going and put in the effort to get the reward.

Just 1 kilometer from the summit are the Ave del Paraiso Botanical Garden and the Isabelica Museum. You can also stop for local coffee for a euro or a dollar, and sample their chocolate bars at the little souvenir shop. The main challenge comes first: near Santiago, climbing Gran Piedra (Great Stone) means tackling 455 steps to reach its 1225-meter summit, so expect a workout. At the top, the view stretches 360° across the region and the Caribbean Sea, and Jamaica is visible on a clear day. You can do everything on foot, though some groups arrive in 4x4 vehicles.
