The water's a gorgeous color, so it's worth coming even if all you want is to sunbathe. It stays fairly calm and is easy to swim in, though it's deep and the bottom has lots of algae. The beach is really beautiful and usually not too busy, especially in winter when it's around 25°C. One thing to watch for: the nearby mangroves are full of mosquitoes. Bring repellent if you're taking the bus, or leave before the last one, which comes around 5 p.m. Waiting there can mean 20 or more bites a minute.

The caretaker was great, and there were plenty of iguanas, especially once our lunch arrived. We took the full-day boat trip to Iguana Island from this marina. I enjoyed it, though the catamaran felt a bit crowded.

We'd worried the beach would be packed and too popular, but it turned out to be lovely and fairly quiet. The water is calm, so swimming is easy.

It feels like a smaller Varadero with fewer tourists. There are three resorts on the beach, while Trinidad, Casilda and La Boca have more than 500 AirBnB's to choose from. Take a taxi to El Nicho waterfall, and make sure to visit Cascada Pilon on horseback.

The sand is nice and the water's clean, and you can snorkel here. It's a pretty good beach, though the restaurants nearby are a bit pricey.
