The family were friendly from the moment we arrived in Viñales by bus, with the owner waiting for us holding a sign with our name. We’d booked through an employee at a tourist agency at the highway rest stop between Havana and Pina del Rio, and stayed in the family home. We soon felt at ease with them. The room and bathroom were comfortable and clean, though the room faced the main road and was often noisy. There was no running hot water. Breakfast cost extra if requested; it was basic, with lots of fresh fruit but hardly any cold cuts and no cheese. Trying to arrange a day trip through the family friend "Chiquo" was a complete failure. It was a scam. Still, we felt comfortable staying there.
