We stayed here after visiting more than 25 hotels this past year, and I’d come back. It wasn’t the best or the worst. The town is cute, and the hotel sits right on the square, close enough to walk to shops, restaurants, and small grocery stores. It’s an old building that’s been remodeled. Breakfast had a decent range of meats, cheeses, eggs, yogurt, fruit, and coffee, much better than an American hotel breakfast by far. The free breakfast is served in a beautiful dining room from 7-10 am. The on-site restaurant was nice too, and we ate there twice. Some details made me wonder: a smoke detector hanging from a wire, a crooked main door with a gap at the top corner, and a smashed-in bathroom door stop. That gap in the door seemed like a safety concern. The bigger problem for me was the shower and tub. If you’ve read my hotel reviews, you know the shower matters to me. Here it took at least 4-5 minutes of running the water before it got hot. At first the drain was painfully slow, leaving me standing in dirty water after showering, but they fixed it. The taxi service has nice cars and nice people, but it costs twice as much as Bolt. I’d use it for reliable, on-time service, but not on a tight budget. As for the front desk, I try to be considerate of how people may feel about Americans in the current geopolitical climate, and I’m very respectful when I travel. Still, the staff weren’t especially friendly to Americans. Maybe that’s just how they are, based on previous reviews. They answered questions, but didn’t make conversation beyond what I specifically needed, like directions or help with the room. One person even let out a loud sigh after I started walking away.

The rooms are large, spacious, lovely, and clean, and the hotel has an excellent restaurant. It’s right on the most beautiful square and, for me, the best hotel in town. Staff are very nice and speak a foreign language, so not knowing Czech was never a problem. Breakfast is buffet-style with a sufficient selection. There could perhaps be more salami options, though there was still enough to choose from. I can only recommend it to everyone.

Staying in the presidential suite in the summer of 2024 was something I absolutely loved. Being right on the square was great, and the atmosphere felt like stepping into the past. I could easily imagine myself as an archduke stopping in town while touring my lands.

I came with a group of 30 and really enjoyed the stay. My room faced the plaza, with a gorgeous view day and night. Breakfast was awesome, and you could easily taste how fresh everything was. The front desk staff weren’t as friendly or patient as at other hotels. I think handling large tourist groups one after another may have been stressful. If I visit this beautiful town again, I’d definitely choose this hotel.

The free breakfast was amazing, served from 7-10 am in a beautiful dining room. We also enjoyed the on-site restaurant, where we ate twice. We’d stay here again, but would book a room at the front on a higher floor to reduce the outdoor noise. Our room overlooked the back street, where the noise was considerable throughout the day, especially during morning deliveries. It also got too warm at times, and the temperature was hard to control, so we had to keep the windows open. If you’re in Česke Budejovice in late December, Grand Hotel Zvon seems to be in the ideal spot. It’s right on Premysl Ottokar II Square, overlooking the magnificent outdoor winter market. You can see it from the dining room. We went every evening for the live music, Ferris Wheel, ice skating rink, food and drink stalls, and local vendors selling cheese, sausages, crafts, and all kinds of presents. There were live owls there yesterday. Five stars for the market. If you’re nearby, come for that alone.
