Hotel Zamek Berchtold

The room had blackout shades that kept it really dark even at 8 am, and having a connecting room with our friends was a nice extra. We came with a friend and our kids because it’s close to Farm park Sobehrdy and seemed handy to sleep, eat, and visit the park in one place. The receptionist and restaurant staff were both very nice. Dinner’s Svíčková was delicious, and my kid finished all his bramborová kaše. The room was cramped, though, with a closet blocking one side of the bed, and the double bed squeaked a lot whenever anyone moved.

The staff were really helpful and friendly, and the building itself is beautiful. But the room was extremely small, the little round window couldn’t be opened, and there was no ventilation. It felt suffocating and like being in a prison, with barely any daylight coming through. Breakfast was poor, with very little choice that seemed to shrink each day. There was no bread or bread rolls to choose from. On our last morning there were no scrambled eggs, only fried eggs, and we even had to ask the kitchen for more Rohliky. The hot options were sometimes scrambled or fried eggs, and boiled or fried sausages. Cold options included fruit, jam, pâté, cheese, and ham.

The rooms were clean and the staff were helpful and spoke English. It’s good value, and you can pay for both the room and restaurant by card. Kozel Brewery is close by. I did miss having air conditioning. The owner’s Sauvignon Blanc was pretty good too.

It’s a family hotel, and while the rooms are small and not especially luxurious, the details make up for that. Everywhere you look feels like a museum, with paintings, rifles, swords, hunting trophies, coins, and plenty more. The place was also really clean and tidy. Great spot to stay.
