Hotel U Dubu

The owners were lovely, and the customer service was absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed staying here.

We found the guesthouse through Slevomat. When I asked for a price, the reply gave me the feeling that things were still right with the world. If you're after gold taps, water beds, a PlayStation room or every kind of sauna, or you're trying to lose weight, this probably isn't the place. But if you want a mother's hug, home cooking and a chat about life's ups and downs, come here. The rooms are very modest but clean, and there's hot water in the shower around the clock for anyone who wants it. Czech food is on offer too. We mentioned at breakfast what we'd like the next day, and it was all there in the morning, including spreads and rolls made to order. The servings are huge, enough for two, with a clean extra plate provided. Tanvaldský Špičák ski resort, a car museum, OC Central in Jablonec and the Detoa wooden toy factory are nearby. I'm not trying to talk anyone into it, but I had a brilliant long weekend: skiing, outings, a sunburned face, a bit of drinking and far too much food. That's a holiday to me. Thanks to the owner and her staff for keeping everything so clean, and a little scratch for the cat.

Parking was easy thanks to the lot, and even when it was well below freezing, our room stayed warm. There's heating in the ski room too. The building is older, of course, but we didn't lack anything and arrangements could be made for whatever we needed. The owner and the rest of the staff were great, the Czech food was excellent, and the location worked well for us. We've come back several times.

The restaurant food is tasty, but most dishes are fried and there are no vegetable sides, so anyone needing to avoid fatty food because of gallbladder trouble won't find much to eat. Breakfast is an adequate buffet, though the tea was undrinkable, as was the coffee, so bring your own. The homemade spreads change, but otherwise breakfast gets monotonous. For a short holiday, that's manageable. It's affordable, basic accommodation, with a common room and children's corner. There's ping pong in the basement, table football by the restaurant, and an equipped kitchenette, boards and a children's corner in the breakfast lounge. The rooms don't have a proper table or chair, so I wouldn't recommend working remotely from here. Wi-Fi was mostly good enough. There isn't a fridge, kettle or similar room equipment either. There's a ski room, but unfortunately no boot dryers. There are relatively plenty of parking spaces.
