Bax

This building is labelled a hotel, but it felt more like a hostel. Ukrainian people staying there apparently look after the place and welcomed us. We came hoping for a break, but instead there was noise, doors slamming, and loud shouting in Ukrainian. The whole hall was unheated. I can only praise one room. A terrible experience, and we were completely put off Znojmo. Never again at the Bax hotel.

One receptionist was very helpful, but another came to us at 9am to say we were late for breakfast, even though breakfast ran until 10am. The first-floor rooms feel dated, with old dirty carpet and scribbles on the wall hidden behind a picture. The beds are terrible, and there’s a big need for a fridge or minibar in the rooms.

The food was awful too. Dinner was boiled rice and meat in an overly sweet, ketchup-like sauce. Afterward, the coffee was some strange brown water that smelled sour, served with a jug of milk. The accommodation itself was disastrous. It used to be a nightclub, and seeing the old, worn beds makes you wonder what went on there. There’s dirt everywhere, the carpets are filthy, and anything you touch is stained. The shower deserves a complaint of its own. Honestly, why put yourself through this punishment?

The deluxe rooms are cozy and newly furnished, with a TV, kettle, and minibar. A few small things were off, like the door not closing properly, the handle being upside down, no toilet paper, and a missing bathroom hook. The bigger problem is the courtyard-facing window, where staff and guests gather to smoke, with no ventilation. The food was the worst part: always something fried, fries and meat with cream or ketchup sauce, schnitzel and potatoes. One day there was no dessert, and on other days it was a mini dessert or ice cream. The kitchen service was pleasant, but one bartender, who also works as receptionist, was nasty and snapped at anyone who asked her something. The bar menu seems to have water and beer, but we were told they were out of about 4 items. Breakfast sometimes had no vegetables or fruit, and the hot dishes were always sausages. Breakfast was sufficient for me since I don’t eat much in the morning. The complimentary bottle of Moravian wine was a nice gesture, if only it hadn’t been dry Veltlín that still comes from Slovakia. Fine for a few nights in a deluxe room, but I wouldn’t spend a week’s vacation there again.
