Hotel Alte Schule

Our dog had a food and water bowl waiting in the room when we arrived. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and breakfast was very good. The hotel felt cozy and clean. Its romantic setting is across from the castle and lovely park, with restaurants and a cafe all around. Absolute A+.

The breakfast staff were friendly and welcoming, the only good part of our four-night stay. My girlfriend and I had booked the room three months ahead to celebrate New Year and our anniversary. After the hotel emailed to ask whether we wanted the New Year's Eve menu, we replied the next day to say yes. At reception, a tall woman with glasses was extremely unfriendly. I said I didn’t speak German, but she kept talking at the same pace, without gestures or any real effort to answer in English. She pointed us to our room in a depressing building across the street. The building shown in the pictures is just the restaurant. The actual hotel was horrible, like a roadside motel in America. The next day, I asked the same receptionist when the New Year's Eve menu started. Suddenly she understood and spoke basic English, then told us we didn’t have a booking for it. It had already been fully booked when they emailed to ask if we were interested. They didn’t bother replying to our email to say we couldn’t get a place. She wouldn’t help or suggest any solution, let alone compensation, and told us to figure it out ourselves, just one day before New Year's Eve. Every restaurant was booked for the next night, so we ended up at a horrible Chinese buffet for our eighth anniversary. During our four days there, the receptionist never managed to smile once, to us or anyone else. She should not work in hospitality. A disgrace. We’ll never come back.

The school theme comes through in the rooms and shared areas, which gives the hotel a nice touch. It was clean, cozy, and really pleasant. The staff were as friendly as could be, and breakfast had a great mix of things.

The room was better than we expected, and the location was great. Everyone did a wonderful job. Staff were friendly, breakfast was amazing, and the restaurant food was brilliant, 11/10. We’ll be back.
